Final Finish When applying the final finish, I like to follow what I call the 24 hour rule. The first step is a light coat of oil. Let it set 24 hours. Then a coat of lacquer. Let it set 24 hours. Then a layer of paste antique which only needs to dry for a few minutes. Say 5 min. or so. The last step is a coat of Tan Kote. Letting the oil dry for 24 hrs. is important in order for the oil to penetrate fully and for the color to even out. If you need to add more oil to lighter colored spots then another 24 hr. is needed to let that set. The lacquer coat needs to set until completely dry. This might happen sooner than 24 hrs. but over the years I have ruined many pieces by trying rush this step. If the lacquer is not dry you can rub the antique compelely through the lacquer coat leaving streaks that cannot be removed so by following the 24 hr. rule I eliminate this chance to make a mistake that can't be corrected.
